Carrot Autumn King
A firm favourite for many years. Large stump rooted Carrots with good colour and can be left in the ground in most Winters. Sowing Sow thinly direct into the growing site 2cm (¾”) deep in rows 30cm (12”) apart. If possible sow carefully so that thinning is not necessary. If you have to thin the seedlings, do so in the evening. Water before thinning and remove all the debris. Do not transplant. Aim for roots 5-7cm (2-3”) apart. Young Carrots can be pulled alternately to ‘thin as you eat’. Never grow carrots on ground that has recently had manure spread, as the roots will fork in search of goodness.
Carrot Chantenay Red Cored
Sowing Sow thinly direct into the growing site 1.5cm (¾”) deep in rows 30cm (2”/3”) apart. If possible sow carefully so that thinning is not necessary. Traditionally seed is mixed with fine dry sand to prevent sowing too thickly. Planting If you have to thin the seedlings, do so in the evening. Water before thinning and remove all debris. Do not transplant. Aim for roots 4-6 cm (2-3”) apart. Young carrots can be pulled alternately to “thin” as you eat. Try not to grow on freshly manured grounds as this can produce forking of roots.
Carrot Early Nantes
An ideal variety to grow in troughs or planters if space is limited. An early main crop variety with beautiful colour and little core. Sowing Sow very thinly in drills 1.5cm (¾”) deep with 25cm (9”) between rows. Carrot fly is attracted by thinning, so try to avoid thinning at all. If plants are overcrowded, thin if necessary in the evening removing all debris from site. Pull alternate roots when small and use whole. Early sowings can be made in a cold frame or under cloches. In mild areas, sow in October under cloches or frame for really early spring use.
Carrot Amsterdam Forcing

Young Carrots can be pulled alternately to ‘thin as you eat’. For Christmas Carrots, try a September sowing in a large 60cm (24”) deep container in a frost-free greenhouse.
